Asphalt Composition Shingles:
Asphalt roofing shingles, also known as composition shingles are the leading choice for Americans because of their durability, quality and economy. As the least expensive of all roofing products, it requires little maintenance. Four out of five homes in the US are roofed with asphalt composition shingles.
Asphalt Shingle Benefits:
There are many benefits to asphalt roofing materials. Asphalt shingles are good performers in extreme temperatures, and areas where wind, water and ice are of particular concern. They are efficient, and the high-volume production and the relatively low application cost of asphalt shingles provide consumers with an overall value that is difficult for competing roofing materials to match, especially in terms of comparable life expectancy. Further, asphalt shingle roofs, when properly chosen and applied, require little or no regular upkeep, and are easily repaired if damaged. Finally, Asphalt shingles are considered to be the easiest of all standard roofing materials to apply and the flexibility and strength of asphalt shingles support their application on a wide variety of roof designs.
Disadvangtages of Asphalt:
Despite their popularity, Asphalt shingles do have deficiencies. They are easy to scar if hot, they are susceptible to blow off in high winds, and they can sag on steep roofs, particularly if hot. Correct nailing helps. Finally, They do not have the dimensional look of tile or shake and their lifespan isn't as long as some other options.
Aesthetics:
There are many composition shingles designed to mimic natural products at a fraction of the cost. The new architectural styles of asphalt roofs available today are simply gorgeous with a wide selection of different textures, styles and colors.
With the introduction of the new light colored granules for commercial roofs, asphalt roofing is a more attractive and cost effective option for businesses as well. According to the Asphalt Roofing Contractors Association, "we are now seeing the advent of stylish-looking commercial roofs.
Installation:
Asphalt shingles are designed to be easy to install and low maintenance for decades. Properly installed, an asphalt roof will withstand bad weather conditions keeping maintenance issues at a minimum.
Warranties:
Different composition shingle roofing manufacturers offer different warranties, evident of the asphalt shingle's durability. Check with your roofing consultant about the warranty of your asphalt shingle prior to your roof installation.
Durability:
Asphalt shingles are manufactured to resist external fire and flammability standards, and carry Class A, B or C fire ratings, with Class A providing the greatest fire resistance. These fire ratings are defined by nationally recognized standards and tested by independent testing agencies. In addition, many asphalt shingles carrying a "wind resistance" label indicate that they have been manufactured and tested to demonstrate acceptable resistance in high-wind locations."
Composition:
Asphalt shingles are either organic-based or fiberglass-based. Organic based shingles are made of recycled waste paper and wood fibers and saturated with asphalt coating and surfaced with weather resistant mineral granules.
Fiberglass-based asphalt shingles are manufactured with mat composed entirely of glass fibers of varying lengths and orientations. This fiberglass base is then surfaced with a specially-formulated asphalt coating, followed by weather-resistant mineral granules.
Types of asphalt composition shingles:
Strip ShinglesAre made to be three times as long as they are wide. These are distinguished by the number of tabs they have. The most common type of strip shingle is the "three-tab" shingle. Different textural and lighting/shadowing effects can be achieved with strip shingles depending on the number, shape and alignment of the cutouts.
Laminated ShinglesThese special shingles contain more than one layer of tabs to create extra thickness. They are also referred to as three-dimensional or architectural shingles because they create visual depth on a roof and impart a custom look. Laminated shingles are a favorite among builders, roofing contractors and homebuyers.
Interlocking Shinglesas the name suggests, interlocking asphalt shingles are individual shingles that mechanically fasten to each other, and are used to provide greater wind resistance. They come in various shapes and sizes providing a wide range of design possibilities.
Large Format Shinglesgenerally rectangular or hexagonal in shape, these shingles do not utilize cutouts or tabs.
